245 U.S participants from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk were recruited to take part in an online survey study on the process of decision makings. Three sets of questions were included in this survey to examine the individual differences on: legacy motives, views about climate change and willingness to take proenvironmental action. Following these three sets of questions, participants were told to win a 10$ bonus from a lottery. Next, another option was given to the participants, which was that part of the bonus could be donated to Trees for the Future, a nonprofit environmental-advocacy organization. The amount of donation was within 0$ to 10$. After the study was done, a lottery winner was chosen. From the winner’s will, the donation was made.

To investigate further on this connection, a test was made to check whether there was a positive correlation between legacy motives and environmental engagement. In the experiment, an essay-writing task on manipulation of the accessibility or salience of legacy motives was gie to the participants. This was done after the engagement scales of pilot study were administered. It was hypothesized an enhancement in proenvironmental beliefs and behaviors would be observed in the participants after the exposure to a legacy-motive-inducing prime.
Three hundred twelve US participants from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk participated in the study on how people make decisions. Two conditions were randomly assigned to participants. In the legacy condition, a short essay, which took about 6.5 mins was done by the participants. From these results, sample size for the present experiment was determined. Participants were asked how future generations could obtain a positive impact from them. This was done as a
