This service goes by the name of Amazon Prime Air. All three of the above listed problems would be solved by Amazon.com's proposal of quick delivery of smaller items. They plan to use these sUAS to transport items under five pounds at a maximum speed of 50 miles per hour. Amazon Prime Air is assuming that these small packages will cover roughly 86% of their regular shipments sold throughout their site (Misener, "Amazon Petition for Exemption"). Amazon's offering will be a huge step forward for consumers once regulators assist them in cutting the red tape to progress with regular sUAS deliveries. So far Prime Air has been relegated to testing their sUAS delivery system indoors and outside of the United States (Misener, "Amazon Petition for Exemption"). The internet retail giant hopes their unmanned delivery system will be a sight just as common as the mailman throughout our neighborhoods on a daily basis. They are reaching out to the Federal Aviation Administration ahead of time to allow exemptions due to the lack of regulations for sUAS. On top of this effort to achieve domestic testing, they are testing their aircraft just 2,000 feet away from the United States in Canada (Pilkington, "Amazon tests delivery drones at secret Canada site after US frustration"). For Amazon to continue to be leaders in this endeavor they will have to partner with the FAA as well as the lobbying group, Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems (AUVSI). Amazon Prime Air's group of software engineers, roboticists, aeronautical engineers, and remote sensing experts have a tall order to fulfill. Goal number one for this team is to create an equivalent or better level of safety with their drone delivery system. This teams hard work now will prevent their legal team future headaches.
