Personal Narrative-Amazon Jungle Of Ecuador

As I stepped off the small, rickety airplane, I gazed out into the vast green rainforest before me. Everywhere I looked was covered with dense green trees and plants. I breathed in the thick and humid air, and was shocked at how similar the climate was compared to Florida. As I continued to absorb the beauty around me, I thought to myself, “You, Addison Pike, are in the Amazon Jungle of Ecuador. Do you realize that you are over sixty miles from any modern civilization?” This thought echoed in my mind and caused me to shake my head in amazement. My heart raced because I knew that there were amazing adventures laying ahead. My gawking was quickly interrupted by the native Indians, whom I and my group would be living with. They came to us and …show more content…
I blindly followed her, unaware of the predicament I was about to be in. We walked for about two blocks once we reached the river, or the “currary” as Menagre called it. The river’s beauty was breathtaking. It flowed downstream, creating gentle, glassy ripples. The riverbank was covered in small black and brown shiny pebbles. I noticed that each pebble shone individually in the sunlight, creating a brilliant glow. We walked closer and began to climb up the steep, muddy ledge that hung over the side of the river. My feet slipped and squished in the mud, which caused me to lose my balance. However, thanks to Mengare’s steady hand, I didn’t collapse into the thick, black mud. However, my lack of balance made Mengare howl with laughter. This only worsened my case, because her laughter was making me laugh, which made me slip more. I imagine that we looked quite silly up …show more content…
To me, it felt like we were fifty feet up in the air, but I could see that Mengare was completely at ease. As I was staring out at the water, I could feel Mengare staring at me and smiling. I looked at her and she said “Beeto botto?” and pointed at me, then pointed down at the water. My heart dropped into my stomach as I began to realize what “beeto botto” meant. She wanted me to jump off of the ledge, into the water with her. Though a complete sense of terror and dread washed over me, I knew that she wasn’t going to let anything bad happen to me. I also knew that if I didn’t jump, I would later regret it. So I took in a deep breath, let out a nervous laugh, looked at Mengare, and nodded. Without even the slightest moment to comprehend what I had just agreed to, I was plummeting to the river below with Mengare. I felt my body splash into the icy waters. Once Mengare and I came up for air, we both began to laugh again and swam to the riverbank

The day was beautiful, too beautiful. The trek to this spot had tired the two families, but now it was time to relax, and cool off. The families gathered around the cascading flow of water that was refreshingly cool in the intoxicating late summer heat. Two brothers looked down at the many glittering pools gathered at the bottom of the immense waterfall. The waterfall was surreal; being from the small, and secluded state of Wisconsin the brothers had never something so large and impressive in nature.…

Empirical analysis of literature can be a strange denomination of fun while reading. Viewing literature for its structure and organization is the essence of what makes being a bookworm so powerful and worth the effort. The ability to surgically splice and dice novels into their core elements and placing them in an organized fashion so that they can be later compared and contrast to other similar list in an effort to claim the positive or negative notoriety of a piece of literature is hardly a ticket to the amusement park. However, despite the initial lack of positives when analyzing literature in such a way, the end result can be a satisfying nature of finding out a portion of a puzzle. This data can be collected under many titles: literary devices, media, diction, language, basically anything in the actual text is up for grabs.…

“A Whole New World” Living in a twenty-first century society having a relationship with the natural world is the last thing on a person’s mind. In this century, nature is taken for granted. One might say nature is underappreciated and not as valued as it probably should be. Jane Goodall’s essay “In the Forests of Gombe” shows the flip side of what we believe the natural world to be. In Goodall’s essay she describes the many things she has learned while spending time in Gombe.…

In chapters 7 and 8 of The Blue Sweater, this was written by Jacqueline Novogratz, the one thing that captivated me was when Novogratz climbed Mount Nyiragongo. Novogratz mentions that before she left Africa, she went for an adventure on the tallest mountain which lay between in the Goma, a city in Rwanda, and Zaire. Novogratz and her Canadian friend (Charles) and their tour guide climbed Mount Nyiragongo. The mountain was one of central Africa’ tallest mountain, it shared border with Rwanda and Zaire. While they climbing and hardly surviving the grueling trails of the mount, only to realize that Novogratz had come to Africa similarly unprepared, without a road map, tools, sufficient gear, or protective layering.…

By 1913, former President Theodore Roosevelt had been out of the White House for four long years, his bid for a surprising third term ended in a defeat to Woodrow Wilson when he is forced to run as a third party candidate and now he's lacking a sense of purpose. He jumps at the opportunity to journey to Brazil as part of a scientific journey of discovery sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. During the planning stages, the trip undergoes changes from one that would be mostly ceremonial in nature for the still greatly admired former President to one of only moderate difficulty, finally becoming an ambitious but arduous exploration of nearly one thousand miles of uncharted Amazonian jungle wilderness. The planning of the trip goes very badly with unnecessary and impractical supplies and various useless modes of transportation due to the many evolutions the trip has undertaken. And yet the selection of members of the expedition may have been even worse than the requisitioning of provisions.…

All my life I have wanted to go on a mission trip to help mentor those in need. So when the opportunity came to go to Jicamarca, Peru I was extremely excited to be a part of the team being shipped off. Before going to Peru we were put through a “special” type of training. During this training we were taught what we were going to be speaking about, a skit, and a ballet dance. So when we went to Peru we would be ready for anything, at least that’s what I thought.…

When vacationing in Peru I was unable to use most of my technology I had. However, it allowed me to enjoy it more without the distractions. I was able to bond more with the people there and had a great time. Every year I volunteer at a camp for 3 weeks where no technology is allowed and it did not affect my attitude and did not take away any enjoyment of being at camp. I can adapt to different settings very easily mostly because I don't have much preference to temperature or foods so most people describe me as someone who is very easy going and willing to try new things easily.…
