Amasa Lee is Harper Lee's father, who was illustrated to be Atticus Finch in the book. He was one of the biggest influences on Lee’s life because of her distant mother, hence her illness. In the story Atticus defends a black man named Tom Robinson which is also what happened to Amasa. He was put on trial to defend a man and his son as they were accused of murdering a white storekeeper. Atticus lost the trial in the story and Tom ended up dying from trying to escape and then being shot, in fact, Amasa lost the case and the two men were hung. In the book, Atticus exclaims "I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody... I'm hard put, sometimes—baby, it's never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name.
