During my childhood, I spent an unusual amount of time at construction pads for various reasons, such as friends building new homes and my family looking at new neighborhoods. My father used our time at one of these pads to tie together a lesson. He, in his kind voice, recited First Corinthians 3:11 “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” He went on to tell me how foundations determine the grandness of the structure to come; whether that be physical, spiritual or educational. One day I would like to follow in my father’s footsteps and be a part of the medical community, but to do so I need a well laid foundation to build my medical education upon. Amarillo College’s Presidential Scholar Program is the foundation I need to pursue my goals. …show more content…
I have had the pleasure and blessing to lead The Kwahadi Dancers’ Youth Program for 3 years, take AP course at my high school and pursue my interests in film and art. These stand as my testimony for preparation towards the Presidential Scholar Program, but one day I’d like to look back and say this program is what prepared me for medical school and a life filled with a deep abiding desire to

I’ve had a variety of exposures to healthcare. I’ve worked in locations ranging from medically isolated villages in rural Africa to urban clinics in the United States, and I’ve been guided by physicians representing disciplines such as family medicine, infectious disease, and pediatrics. Just as diversity is essential to medicine, a diverse range of exposures is equally important for a medical student. The reason I am most interested in the Columbia-Bassett program is because it will provide me with a unique opportunity to learn about health care in two very different environments. This will enrich my capacity to work as a physician.…

When it comes to a dreamer’s preeminent desire, one’s true, undying, ambitions, finally waking up and discerning reality from fantasy is the first step of achieving such longings. One should not tether onto the fanciful idea of becoming the utmost success story of our generation, especially if they’re not willing to endeavor years of hard work and determination to achieve so. Becoming anything economically feasible in the medical field can be extraordinarily tedious, like sticking a thick thread through a meager needle. I truly understand, to the best of my ability, that becoming a Medical Practitioner is easier said than done, however, ever since I was a young lad, there’s been some sort of specter, gnawing away at my thoughts, making my own…

At a very young age, I always dreamed of playing an important role within the medical field. During playtime, my toys were always the instruments used on a daily basis by health care physicians and nurses such as stethoscopes, sphygmomanometers, and needles. Under my grandmother’s care, I would always pretend to measure her blood pressure and listen to her heartbeat all the time. As the years passed, and even before I started college, I knew that I belonged in the medical field, but the fear of failure in the difficult pre-requisite courses required for the program held me back from achieving my dreams. It was not until just a few months ago when I was hospitalized that I had an epiphany.…

Personal statement Growing up in a small town in rural India in a family of doctors I was exposed to the field of medicine early in life. I and my twin brother loved to accompany my father to his clinic, where we spent hours looking at the fascinating world beneath the lens of the microscope. My resolve to work in a medical profession only grew through my undergraduate years, and so I worked tenaciously to get into one of the best medical schools in India. Exposure to the field of radiology came while I was working as a primary care physician. Our hospital was located next to a major interstate highway in India, and I was impressed the way CT scans changed the diagnosis and management of head injury patients and saved precious lives.…

This past semester has been a very difficult one for me. While I was at Austin College I was on a growth trajectory. Austin College supported me as a whole person, leading to not only my academic growth but personal growth, emotional growth, and spiritual growth. While others may flourish in these ways at University of Puget Sound I have not; I have found myself regressing which is apparent in my academic performance for the semester. I had previously discounted the role that environment plays in the many aspects of growth.…

Ballet has always been near and dear to my heart, so much so that I took a year off from high school to pursue it on a professional level. During my year away I came to the firm conclusion that there was far more in life I cared to pursue then the four-mirrored walls I had come to know as home. I was lucky enough to find an amazing high school with a specialized “pre-med” program, the director with whom I have come to know far more as a mentor than as a teacher. Dr. Carlos Pulido is one of the wisest men I have met to date, a retired chief of surgery and certified army trauma surgeon, he is a remarkable example of all I hope to achieve in my life.…

It’s seven on a Saturday morning, and my first patient of the day as a nutrition counselor at Haven Free Clinic is a Hispanic male in his mid-50s. After graduating and beginning my first ever professional career, I am finally sitting back and evaluating what my future goals would be. Having tutored and being teachers’ assistant for different groups of college students for more than three years, a career in teaching posted less of a challenge for me to overcome. Because most of my students were refugees and non-native English speakers, I did have to innovate daily on how to communicate and endow my knowledge to students. That being said, my past three months have been a wonderful, interactive and educational experience. I understand that my teaching is doing impacts on my student on a daily basis, however, I do not find teaching fulfilling enough to be my ultimate career.…
