It’s a Friday night, a young 11 year old girl is sitting in front of her computer screen staring at the her chat log in fear with a supposed 12 year old boy, but he has revealed his true identity. He had turned out to be a 30 year old man and she is terrified because she had shown him something which she shouldn’t have. In addition, he had been stalking her. Because of this, she was verbally and physically abused. She then decided to take her own life because she couldn’t take the countless threats sent to her by the harasser and the bullying from her classmates. Statistics have shown that 20% of kids cyberbullied think about suicide and 1 in 10 attempt it (Laird). Amanda Todd was a 15 year old Canadian girl who faced a similar situation. I

Amanda Todd was a young 15 year old girl that killed herself due to bullying and cyberbullying. In addition, her suicide drew attention worldwide to a detrimental issue: Online Abuse. She was constantly being bothered by a pedophile whom she didn’t initially think was a bad guy. The man behind this act was a 38 year old Dutch man who lived in the Netherlands who disguised himself as a young 12 year old boy with a user “Tyler Boo”. He not only targeted Amanda Todd, in fact, he would pretend to be a boy or girl and persuaded his victims to do sexual things in front of their webcams, take pictures, and post them online. He was able to do such a thing to Amanda because he blackmailed her by threatening her to do so. As a matter of fact, she brought cyberbullying to the attention of online users by simply posting a video on Youtube in which she explained how she was tricked and being harassed by a stranger online to expose her breast on a webcam through her handwritten note cards. Amanda Todd’s decision to kill herself was influenced by the constant harassment from the pedophile, fellow peers making fun of her, and the loneliness she faced.
