Amanda Knox Analysis

Outside of the coverage on Knox's promiscuous image, her lack of an emotional response towards the death of her friend lead to an increase of reporting on her behavior, of which many journalists labeled her as a psychopathic “she-devil” (Cooper, 2011). Much has been made of the fact that Knox was seen giggling and performing cartwheels during her first visit to the police station following the discovery of her roommates heinous murder. During that visit a friend of Kercher's expressed that she hoped she had not suffered to which Knox responded with, “What do you think? They cut her throat...she fucking bled to death!” Investigators became incredibly uneasy with this response, and when she was arrested her behavior was described as cold and …show more content…
While both sides were caught up in the media frenzy surrounding this case, many news outlets in the United States were in support of her innocence and followed the overwhelming notion of a wrongful conviction described above. On the other side of the Atlantic, however, she was seen as she was most notably illustrated, as a sex crazed man eating psychopath that killed her roommate when a sex game went awry. While both Sollecito and Guede received the same treatment from the press as Knox, due to fewer uncertainties concerning their confessions and the collection of definitive evidence from the crime scene they did not generate the same kind of obsession in the public's eye as Knox did, especially Guede. The evidence against him was overwhelming, which included DNA found throughout the room and on the victims clothing. It is a surprise that the coverage on Guede was severely lacking and the only reason that seems to make any sense is that Amanda Knox was a more captivating story to tell. Similarly, while everyone knows the name Amanda Knox, not everyone knows the name of Meredith Kercher. While journalists and correspondents were so enthralled with their enchanting stories of a beautiful girl gone killer, the victim Meredith Kercher was completely erased from headlines. From the start this case had elements for the perfect story, the picturesque hilltop community and female sexual violence. Sadly, the interest in this case was not because of the female victim at all, it was always because of the female suspect, and because of that the worlds attention focused on Knox and not on pursuing justice for Kercher and her

Nearly one month later, on July 10, 1977, Craig’s body was found floating in a nearby strip-mine pond that had already been intensely searched in the first few days and weeks following his disappearance (Flynn, Grace). An autopsy report determined that there was no definite cause of death, but then again authorities had poured fuel on the body at the time of discovery to “kill maggots” supposedly. This move disabled all ability to make determination of cause of death from tissue samples. The sheriff at the time, along with the grand jury, recommended that the case remain open (Flynn, Grace). After several years, Craig Lloyd Graham’s cause of death is still listed as unknown with no new facts or evidence to help find out who committed this terrible crime (“Craig Lloyd Graham”).…

Peter William Sutcliffe otherwise known as ‘The Yorkshire Ripper ' was arrested on January 1st, 1981 after a murderous spree which spanned five years and claimed the lives of 13 women and attempting to murder a further seven (see appendix for details of victims). The case engulfed the nation as one of the most brutal in modern history since that of ‘Jack the Ripper ' in the 1800 's hence why the media adopted the term ‘Yorkshire ripper ' when addressing the case.
