Amanda Kline: What Does It Mean To Be An Artist

What does it mean to be an artist? There are many definitions and interpretation of being an artist. Amanda Kline is an artist and a professor who believes being an artist is not just about being able to make or create art. She believes being an artist is also about being a problem solver as well as making something that means something or that is a part of you. She believes that everyone is an artist in their own way whether it is writing a paper to painting a picture in some ways we are all alike. “You are always doing something different” said Kline, “That’s why I love what I do.” She is always excited to start her day doing something different and not having certain expectations for the day or even the week. She loves that “Artists embrace the weiredness!” she doesn’t always have to be professional, when you are creating a piece of art you put yourself into it, it is a piece of you and you are unique so why shouldn’t your art be unique as well. She emphasizes how great it is to create something new and original everyday and how artist are problem solvers they always think of creative way to fix a problem. Yes she had to work hard for what she wanted to do and be but if you don’t work hard to get what you want or do what you love then what is the point? You have to write to galleries and online shows to submit your work. Sometimes you get rejected but Kline says “It hurts to be rejected but it does not mean your art is not good.” If you get rejected from a show it just means that it probably wasn’t their style not that it was bad. Kline also said “Get the negative feelings out and just keep making art!” When you do get accepted into a show you have to write your artist statement which needs to tell the viewers who you are as an artist and why you made your work. Then if you want a job you have to write your resume and also for grant proposals. There is a lot of work involved in any job that you do but chose something that you love and that the work isn’t just work it is your
