From what is shown through the first scene, Amanda's relationship with her children was not a good one, because she treats Tom like a child and lives her life through Laura. Amanda wants to go back to the past like Gatsby and Hannah because of the idea that it was better, creating a universe that her daughter was perfect and her son doesn't go out all the time.
Scene 2
Because Amanda is living through Laura, she is trying to control everything that goes on in Laura's life, making her more insecure when Amanda tells her not to deal with her disability. Laura's leg situation is going to get bigger if no one acknowledges what's wrong, pushing it aside and making it worse. While Laura and him are having a conversation, the awkwardness that was seen in the beginning is getting less and less as she is becoming more comfortable with Jim. He is able to win her over because he is acknowledging her limp and talking about what she wants, for Laura is mainly used to her mom talking about herself whenever with her. Jim is seeing her and sculpting the conversation around Laura. While showing her prized collection to Jim, she is holding out a unicorn symbolizing her and her disability. Later on the horn breaks and this shows that Laura is an ordinary girl now. After getting to know each other better, the climax started when he kissed her but immediately regrets it and tells her of his engagement to another woman. The candles on the table are blown out symbolizing Laura's emotional death in that moment, where she will never be the same again. To deal with her stress, she goes to the Vitrola and starts winding up some music stating that she is being abandoned again, first by her father and now Jim. After he left and told the rest of the family the truth, Amanda starts to face reality in her decisions like Geneva in The Death of a Confederate colonel. Being more aware that she will forever have to take care of Laura for the rest of her life and just starts loving her. Tom leaves Laura and Amanda later on
