Mona’s Rescue
Aliyah Musson & Amanda Howland
One day in the city of Athens I was walking down Main Street to get my dad, brother and I some fruits. As I was walking home I decided to take the long way home. When I got home my dad sat down and was about to tell us something. He slowly told us “I am so sorry Mona and Agata. I have to go and buy more food this weekend, So I will not be here with you.”
We were so scared that we might not be able to be okay on our own. My dad told us that he had to leave the next day. We stood there in shock. That night had went by very slowly, sadly. As the sun rose the next day we went with our father to the gates. Then, we hugged him goodbye. Then my dad's boat left and it was only Mona and I. The next day,

I snuck out of the house to go into the woods to get berries. As I was walking through the woods a strange guy came up from behind him and picked him up and took him away. Later on, I woke up from my nap and I saw that Mona was missing. I ran outside and yelled his name continuously. But I heard no response. So then I thought of exactly where I thought he was and the woods came straight to my head. So I ran as fast as I could through the cold and wet grass. I finally came to the opening peak of the woods and I heard nothing except Mona screaming “Help me!” Then I ran towards the screaming and I found Mona in a very bad position and this guy was running with him in his arms. I ran up right beside the man, I kicked him and took Mona with me back to our house. When we got there I laid him on the cold floor by the berries we had last night, and asked him if he was alright. He said yes and the next thing I knew my dad was home and he helped us wrap leaves around my brothers upper leg to stop the bleeding. We then sat down and gave each other a big hug, father then told us stories about war, until both Mona and I fell

For three years, Father had refused the idea of leaving North Carolina. But my brother, Ben, sent us another letter, addressed as he always did to John Benjamin Wilks and Katie. In the letter Ben was praising his new farm, the richness of the land and how many more acres he was clearing. He told of the bountiful crops of corn and wheat that he would be reaping in a few weeks, more corn and wheat per acre than Father had ever gotten from our old worn out farm in North Carolina. He told of the abundance of water, game, and timber.…

It was two weeks before Mom and Dad died, we had come to celebrate the new car. As I was reminiscing, my nightmare sped through my head in a split second, but it still managed to scare me enough to scream in a crowded restaurant. My brothers and Mary leaped out of their seats, and Soda hugged me. I found it amazing, how Darry and Soda seemed to know, I guess they were thinking about our last time here too. Maybe we’re even closer than I thought.…
