The gust of wind carried the aroma of freshly trimmed grass; although the window was slightly ajar the smell rapidly rushed through. The …show more content…

The smell of freshly brewed coffee lingered throughout the well-kept dining area. A beautiful array of portraits that lined the egg shell colored walls caught the attention of everyone who passed them. Skylights flaunted a trickle of sun down upon the elders who were engulfed in a game of bingo in the center of the room. Glass doors opened to the room used for entertainment. During my time with the Excell Education Pre-Physician Assistant Clerkship, I was able to serve the geriatric population by assessing their quality of life at the nursing home. Vibrant birds chirp cheerful melodies, and a stream trickles by whistling a joyful tune. The rising sun peeks over the mountain, and I am warmed. The thick beams of light flash about me until they break the frigid state of the long untamed grass and light the trees with a certain glow. It was early on a Saturday morning; the weather was quite pleasant with the temperature ranging from the high sixties to the low seventies. I can feel the breeze coming from east carrying the scent of the green earth. It was as if someone were to take nature and put it in a pungent fragrance. The smell of mowed grass and the smell of the damp earth mixed with the fallen leaves of the White Oak, embodied the start of fall.…

The short extract from ‘Smoke, lilies and Jade’ by Richard Bruce Nugent is from a Bildungsroman play foretelling the plight of Alex - a 19-year-old, black, male facing internal conflicts and confusion in regards to his sexuality. Therefore, taking this context into consideration, the extract naturally issues an underlying, thematic patterning of fragmentation, uncertainty, and tension. From a close reading, these themes spill out through the content, the form, as well as the diction. In more specific terms, it is achieved through literary and stylistic devices in the following ways; an abstract stream of consciousness disfigured shifts between time and setting, the disparity between an exterior and interior dialogue, and finally, the rebellious…
