Always Saying the Truth
In the story Like the Sun by R. K. Narayan, Sekhar the teacher is the main character. Sekhar believed that at least one day a year everyone should say the truth about anything that may happen. He tried to stay truthful for a day. Being truthful is great, but sometimes it comes out mean and not nice. Sekhar has consequences from other people when he tells them the absolute truth. Most of the time, the two literary terms that are affected in this story are internal conflict and theme.
To begin, the literary term internal conflict was affected by the main character Sekhar. Internal conflict means the main character struggles against some element within himself or herself. An example of an internal conflict is when Sekhar struggles deciding to tell or not to tell the headmaster the truth. Theme is a central message or perception about life that is revealed through literary work. The theme in Like the Sun is when telling the truth sometimes has consequences. A quote from the story, “I must must have them tomorrow morning. And remember every paper must be scrutinized.” The quote shows the consequence after telling the truth. Sekhar tried to go for a whole day telling the truth and when it came to telling the headmaster the truth he did not want to tell him at first. Before telling him the truth, the headmaster gave Sekhar ten days to grade the test papers because Sekhar was at his house listening to him sing. Then, Sekhar told the headmaster the truth about his singing. The next day the headmaster appreciated Sekhar's opinion but he did not give him the ten days to grade the papers.
