Alverno Case Study In Education

Alverno College is a small liberal arts school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where faculty believes that education means “being able to do what one knows” (Locker & Metkowski, 1993, p. 7). Alverno College is so committed to leadership development that they created a Community Leadership major that focuses on civic engagement and ethical leadership. They incorporate theory and practical experience that focuses on developing ethical leaders for tomorrow! The essential ingredient in Alverno’s approach to education is that they concentrate on both engaged learning and an active approach to the assessment of learning outcomes. The primary focus in student development is to support students in developing their strengths in each of the learning outcomes Faculty is expected to teach in a variety of methods to ensure that students are gaining the knowledge and skills to demonstrate this performance. The program draws on an interdisciplinary approach focusing on developing financial skills, deployment of assets, implementation of well planned solutions for improving community life and the evaluation of program effectiveness. They hope to inspire everyday students to “lead the change.” The LEAD program firmly believes that leadership can be learned and that all individuals are capable of being leaders. L E A D endorses the practice of selfless service and ethical leadership skills! Cultural diversity and engaged social change are important methods in this program and the joint team in student affairs and academics co - lead this engaged leadership program.
