Andrew Lloyd Webber is a man who made the musical Evita to keep her legacy alive long after her death. Although he does this, he knows that Evita and her husband Juan Peron were people of questionable pasts. I agree with Webber that both of them should be relished for what they did in helping Argentina, but their pasts are nothing to be proud of. People should take caution to putting these two as ideal model figures. Maria Eva Duarte, otherwise known as Evita, and Juan Peron were two of the most influential people that resonated in Argentina, but both have an irrefutable past that cannot be ignored.…

My mother, Maria, was born and raised in San Salvador. San Salvador is the capital city of El Salvador, is the smallest country in Central America, and for her childhood and teenage years, the country was in a civil war. This civil war started in 1980 and lasted 12 years. In the summer of 1990, Maria decided to visit her eldest sister, Fatima, for the winter holidays. Fatima and her first daughter, Karla, had first immigrated illegally to Houston, Texas in 1983 with the help of Mexican Coyotes – “people smugglers” who helped with the migration of people across the Mexico–United States border, and then finally to Vancouver, Canada in 1985 where she gained refugee status for herself and her family.…

Aside from sharing the same cultural background and pursing the Urban Studies masters, Jennifer is also my coworker at 1199 Training and Upgrading Fund. The picture herein was taken on the last day of the 2014 fall semester when Jennifer was delivering her capstone presentation Exploring Multiple Dominican Identities. Interestingly, Jennifer and I share similar interests regarding where we both fit in the American culture and how our urban experiences have shaped our multiple Dominican identities. As for me, both the public celebration of the parade and the space of the Murphy Institute have “helped give form to, and construct” my identity as a Dominican American in the United States because it is here that I’ve been able to exert my right to an education (Krohn-Hasen, 2012, p.190). “We educate because we expect a future and have trust in it; we educate because we refuse to allow the generations simply to ‘come and go like waves on the beach’ leaving everything just as it was before” (Greene, 1982, p.9).…
