Aluminum Foil Lab

In the first week, 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask contained 20 grams of dissolved sucrose in 200 mL of room temperature water. 0.30 grams Pasteur’s salts and 0.20 grams of dried yeast were added into the mixture separately, as the Erlenmeyer flask gently moved in a swirled motion to mix the substances. Aluminum foil was lightly crimped over the opening of the Erlenmeyer flask, and fermented for two weeks. When time is up, 6 mL of the solution was placed into a vial. The fraction distillation was performed using a 250 mL round bottomed flask; 20 mL of solution was collected per three fractions. The purity of each solution was determined by the density.

A graduated cylinder was used to measure 200mL of distilled water into an Erlenmeyer flask and then 40mL of 0.6 M NaOH was added to the distilled water in the flask. The flask was then plugged with a rubber stopper and shook in order to mix the solution. A buret was then washed, rinsed with distilled water, and then 5 mL of the NaOH diluted solution. After the cleansing of the buret, it was then filled up with the NaOH diluted solution. The dilution of the solution was calculated to find the molarity of the NaOH.…

Next, using a graduated cylinder, tap water (10 mL) was added to each vial containing the culture medium. Upon addition of water, white culture medium turned blue. Additional amounts of tap water were added to each vial to provide more moisture. Next, three grains of yeast were added to each of the four vials. The vials were capped.…

This lab is designed to find the mass of copper produced when excess aluminium is reacted with 2.00g of copper salt [Copper (II) chloride decahydrate]. This will be achieved by dissolving the given amount of copper salt in distilled water and then adding in the aluminium rod. The reaction will commence as copper will begin to form on the aluminium. Calculating the percent yield is commonly used in the atom economy of a chemical reaction, which is a measure of the initial substance which becomes the useful product(s). Reactions with low efficiency which generate a great amount of waste and produce a smaller amount of the product desired have low atom economies and therefore a lower percent yield.…

The purpose of this lab was to synthesize the compound KAl(SO4)2 ●12H2O(S) also known as Potassium Aluminum Sulfate Dodecahydrate but simply known as alum. Aluminum foil was dissolved in Potassium Hydroxide that was stirred on a hotplate stirrer which was then mixed with Sulfuric acid under constant stirring and within a fume hood. It was then placed in an ice bath and filtered and left to dry. After the alum crystals were synthesized and dried they had to be analyzed to determine their percent yield, melting point, and percent error.…

My ideas by doing a solar oven is getting a box of pizza that is empty. When you have the box of the pizza you cut it and get aluminum foil to cover it up on the top. Then, when you do that you get another piece of aluminum foil to put it at the bottom of the pizza box. If we have to make the oven I will do it because it looks like a fun activity. It will work because the sun is going to hit the box and will hit the aluminum so it could heat up and cook.…

Observation, results, and calculations Observations During this experiment, it was observed that sucrose shows a soluble component which physical appearances results to be more crystal in nature and bonded together during the first separation. The separation of dichloromethane and sodium hydroxide reveal two layers of different density liquids solution whereby one is denser in nature than the other solution. The dense solution is referred to as the sodium hydroxide while the bottom layer which occurs to be less dense is referred to as the dichloromethane. One of the components of panacetin was observed in the dense sodium hydroxide solution and the component was separated using extraction method.…

In this laboratory session, the pressure distribution over a NACA 2415 aerofoil for a range of angle of attack was measured. The lift coefficient for the aerofoil was calculated and compared with the published NACA data, the effect of the leading-edge slat is determined using the wind tunnel experiment. Also understand the aerofoil characteristic in terms of fundamental fluid dynamics. The coefficient of pressure (C_p) is calculated by the ratio of static pressure (P-P_∞) over the dynamic pressure of the free stream (1/2 ρU_∞^2) using the equation: C_p=(P-P_∞)/(1/2 ρU_∞^2 ) . The lift coefficient (C_L) is determined by lift force over the freestream dynamic pressure times the wing area (S) C_L=…
