Alum Powder Lab Report

The purpose of this lab is to grow crystals on an egg to make a geode using alum powder. The independent variable is the eggshell used. The dependent variable is the amount of alum powder used. The alum powder will be used to make the crystals, while the eggshell will be used to represent the sedimentary rock. The goal is to see if different amounts of alum powder will affect the amount of crystals that grow. In this experiment, the groups’ hypothesis is the more alum powder in the solution, the bigger crystals will form.

A geode is a “mass of minerals within a rock that can take thousands of years to form” (Steve Spangler). The word geode is from the word Geoides, which is considered “Earthlike” (Wonderopolis). These rocks form geodes when

“It is generally considered by geologists in terms of the textures, structures, and fossil content of the deposits laid down in different geographic and geomorphic environments” (Sedimentation). Sedimentation is the accumulation of minerals to form solid layers. “Chemical sedimentation is understood in terms of chemical principles and laws” (Sedimentation). The interior of most geodes consists of quartz and calcite. “Quartz crystals are silicates” and a silicate is the most common mineral on earth. Iron, magnesium, copper, and voila are elements that can change the color of the crystals in a geode (Geodes). Climate, Vegetation, Physical and chemical properties of a rock have an impact on the breakdown of minerals in a rock. Sediments can also be transported by wind, water, and gravity (Sedimentary). Potassium alum is the most common and most used out of these alum powders. Alum is used for household and industrial procedures. It can be used as a flame retardant, in whitener, toothpaste ingredient, and many more. This ingredient can be found in the spices isle in a grocery store (About Education). The powder is used in many at home projects that include creating crystals. “Several minerals are used as the source material to produce alum, including alum schist, alunite, bauxite and cryolite” (About Education). Alum powder is not to be consumed and may irritate skin. It could potentially attack people’s lungs and irrupt into the bloodstream. If it goes into the bloodstream, it would have the same effect as if someone overdosed on any other electrolyte. “Aluminum, from your diet or healthcare product, can cause degeneration of nervous system tissue” (About Education). To make a geode, it is possible to use sugar or salt, but it will make the crystals cube-shaped instead of hexagon-shaped when using alum powder (Magical Daydream). When conducting this experiment, by covering your egg with alum powder, it will give the suspended alum particles a place that they can attach themselves to the eggshell more easily (Steve
