Jane is what many would consider a good person, this is because she shows very altruistic ideas and actions. She was very progressive for the age that she was in. This is because she cared a lot for the little guy getting stomped on by huge corporations even though it was none of her concern considering her own economic setting in the society. She also cared about people that most people didn’t care about, immigrants. People that many viewed as ruining the society that was America back then. These were all things that are important to notice while reading Twenty Years at Hull House. With a system of alliances in place among multiple nations, one by one other countries joined The Great War, which today is known as World War I. Since Addams beliefs were completely against war and violence she certainly opposed the U.S. government to joining the war. “To her a government at war was a government seeking to harm its citizens: it not only required them to kill other human beings and to risk being killed but redirected tax dollars from social programs into military expenses and restricted citizens’ right to free speech” (Knight,189). Pojman strongly rejects the idea of Ayn Rand that everyone should have and egoist morality by explaining the “false dilemma” created between egoism and altruism. He explains that her idea of egoism stating that she believes “selfishness is a virtue and altruism is a vice.” He argues that while some egoist traits are morally necessary, such as self-love and self-interest, they should not be brought about or acted upon at the cost of someone else’s happiness. The idea that one ought to “love thy neighbor as yourself” means to treat everyone with the same respect and dignity that you treat yourself with, not to harm a stranger for your own happiness or joy.
