Nurse must strive to maintain altruism, autonomy, human dignity, and integrity. These four values contribute to our ability to provide compassionate care to every person. Often one goes with another, such as dignity and autonomy. All of these things are values that I put into use with every patient interaction.
Altruism can be demonstrated during our admission process. Altruism is a value that goes along with integrity. It is my responsibility to my patients to ensure that they are safe during their stay and upon return home. There are times when a patient is too weak to care for themselves, yet during their admission, they tell me they are from home alone. It is my job to advocate for them and ensure that they will be safe when they leave our facility. I have had a physician attempt discharge a patient that was clearly unsafe for returning home, so out of concern for her welfare I had to step up and push for an evaluation that help her with rehab placement. Integrity plays a role because I may not feel like putting in the extra time and effort to make sure they go to a place that can care for them appropriately. I could brush it off and hope that someone else catches it, but that does not display the integrity that I possess. When I took my position, I gave my word that I would work to keep my patients
