Whenever Bob would meet with Jerrold though he would find it difficult to express his feelings and would only comment on Fester’s abilities and his progress. Knowlton was used to presenting at meetings with the sponsors of the research they were doing. Though he wanted to maintain that role, he went to Jerrold to suggest that Fester take on the position of presenting in the upcoming meeting. He even went as far as to praise Fester and note that it would be a good time to recognize the good work that Fester was doing within the department. After the meeting, Fester received praise from the funders as well as Jerrold. Although this interaction “disgusted” Knowlton, he joined the circle of people in order to give his praise to Fester. Knowlton’s previous interactions with Jerrold conveyed that he was happy with his position and with the work that Fester was doing in the office. It was a surprise to Jerrold when Knowlton sent him his resignation

Characters are not always black and white, rather somewhere in between. This often makes it challenging to tell apart the good from the bad and decide which characters to root for. Nevertheless, these “grey” characters can often be all the more compelling to readers, because of their similarities to real people. The characters, Wes and Bob, from Mary Razzell’s short story, “The Job”, are no exceptions. On the surface, Wes and Bob seem like stereotypical, good and bad characters; Wes being the spiteful old grouch and Bob being the kind, supportive friend.…
