While it is completely logical for those in society to think of convicts in a negative light it doesn’t mean that they do not have the potential to make something better of themselves. If state governments were able to use alternative such as work camps it would give these criminals a chance to give back to society in ways that many people may never have thought of. However, historically work camps have gained a negative connotation do to the tragic events of the holocaust and other tragic cases. Cases such as the events at a Texas work camp that resulted in the injury and improper treatment of prison workers have led to work camps being looked upon negatively (Walter). In the Texas work camps, conditions were deemed unacceptable but could have easily been avoided if the appropriate inspections had taken place and if the prisoners were treated humanely (Walter). Due to this there would be a need for rules and regulations, consistent upkeep of working conditions, and thorough background checks of those in charge of the workers to ensure ethical conduct. Providing prisoners with some form of outlet would prove to be an effective and healthy alternative that could potentially aid in providing for the people in their community they may have caused
