The Benefits Of Alternative Energy Resources

Superior Essays
While discussing fossil fuels, there is nearly always another topic mentioned: alternative energy resources. Alternative energy resources are defined as, “current technologies that have comparable or better performance, but do not emit carbon dioxide (Alternative Energy 2015).” Due to the harmful nature of the overuse of fossil fuels, scientists hope to replace them with four alternative energy resources. The four alternative energy resources are solar power, nuclear power, wind power, and hydroelectric power.
Solar energy is derived from the sun. It is considered to be a valuable resource because, unlike fossil fuels, it is inextinguishable. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, there are four ways to harness it: photovoltaics,

It uses mirrors to track the sunlight, and that sunlight is converted into thermal energy through a receiver tube. The resulting product is usable electricity. Unlike the latter, however, this method uses mirrors to track the sunlight. These large mirrors are called heliostats.
Another way to absorb solar power is through heating and cooling. These systems collect thermal energy and uses it, as the name suggests, to heat and cool homes, businesses, and even to heat pools. Solar power is highly extensive, and it is easy to believe that the planet could survive on solar power alone; however, there are three more alternative energy resources. One of them is nuclear power.
According to the Nuclear Energy Institute, there are ninety-nine power plants currently in the United States. Together, they generate nearly twenty percent of the country’s electricity. These plants convert boiling water into steam. The steam turns into turbine, which turns into electricity. This is possible due to the existence of uranium, and there are two types: U-238 and U-235. U-235 contains atoms with an unstable nucleus. The nuclei break up, enabling the neutrons to burst free. From there on occurs a domino effect: One neutron hits another atom, causing that atom to split. U-238 is rarely used. In both cases, the uranium is contained in tubes held up by rods in order to control the reaction. The heat from the fission meets water, and this water is also generated through a turbine to generate steam. The end result is a steam which is used for

Do Solar Covers Really Work? Solar energy is increasing in popularity lately, especially when you consider the high cost of heating with electrical energy. Solar power comes from eliciting the sun rays to a silicon panel which transforms the sunlight into heat or energy. If you are thinking about purchasing a solar cover or a solar blanket, you should know a couple of things first.…

The neutrons, according to Mikhail Chudakov, an editor for Harvard College Review of Environment and Society states, “can strike nearby uranium atoms and cause them to split as well, leading to a chain reaction that continues to release heat along with the neutrons that sustain it.” Uranium is packed tightly in the cell so it can start on its own because of its low rate of splitting. Most nuclear cells that are used in reactors, use U-238. U-238 is a stable form of uranium and is safe, but U-235, when used in fission, can split more easily but is more unstable. The more unstable the uranium is, the greater the amount of heat that can be produced…

"During the past years, numerous technological innovations have been made; however, the initiation of solar energy usage is perhaps the most promising. For instance, as a direct result of the rapid depletion of nonrenewable resources, human populations will eventually have to turn to the one inexhaustible resource that can help preserve the human living style; that is, the sun. To demonstrate, a German architect named Andre Broessel, recently created a solar power generator in the shape of a spherical lens that is not only convenient, but that is also highly efficient when compared to other traditional solar panels. Capable of powering homes, serving as a substitute for resources such as natural gas, and even capable of being utilized as a…

Unlike fossil fuel plants, which produce large quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year, nuclear power plants don't spew out smoke. Electricity is created by splitting atoms in a series of nuclear reactions, otherwise known as nuclear fission. The white plumes rising from cooling towers are nothing more than steam created from the cooling system. Nuclear power is considered carbon-free and produces more electricity than other renewable resources such as solar energy and wind from generators. Scientists agree that greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are building up in the atmosphere and are one of the main causes of the exponential increase in global temperatures.…

climate does change, it is almost always in relation to the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. According to Howard Lee, a geologist who writes for a website called skeptical science, stated that the earth 's climate has abruptly risen in the past, as it is doing today. He also says that these abrupt rises in earths climate has always been destructive for life on earth, causing mass extinction. The Permian period is an example of this. The Permian period is also known as the great dying because 90% of earths life was wiped out by a sudden release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.…

A nuclear power plant uses Nuclear Fission to create energy. Nuclear fission occurs when a neutron passes by a heavy nucleus such as Uranium-235, the nucleus may capture the neutron which may or may not cause nuclear fission. If the reactor used is U-235 when a neutron is captured the energy is spread out through the 236 nucleons (both protons and neutrons) that are currently present in the nucleus. This nucleus is likely to break up into two fragments due to its instability. These fragments are usually half its mass.…
