The word bully used to mean friend and lover. This term has changed drastically over time where it became linked to death and strong isolation in the 18th and 19th century. The book “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton is a very interesting book with an important message, violence is not always the answer. This is shown in several different examples throughout the book. Most of us have seen violence even if it was a dramatic television show or in an actual real life experience, overall most of us have seen someone physically hurt. Ponyboy has seen violence throughout his life and during the experience as depicted in the book, he learns that violence is not good nor will it ever fix his problems. First, Ponyboys conversation with Randy tells us a lot about himself and what some people think about violence and the events that is going on in his life.…
Globally, over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year . In fact, one in ten students end up dropping out of school in order to avoid repeated bullying (Eleven). In the book, Speak, we see Melinda Sordino experience bullying from her classmates due to her actions at a summer party; she had called the police causing tons of people getting in trouble. Despite students not knowing her reasons for doing so, Melinda becomes constantly taunted and looked down upon by other teens for her response. In Mikel Lynn Brown’s book Girlfighting: Betrayal and Rejection among Girls, a light is shown on bullying among girls. Girlfighting identifies interpersonal conflict and relational aggression in adolescents. Relational aggression is defined as “a psychological term that signifies the use of realationships to hurt others” (Dellasega, Nixon 9). Relational aggression harms a person mentally and can cause depression, paranoia, or even for someone to become suicidal. With detrimental side effects one would think that relational aggression is rare but nearly “90% of students reported being the target of bullying or relational aggression at one time or another” (The Ophelia Project).…
A local problem in our community, and many others, is an issue that is not just in the movies. As high school students, teenagers often experience or observe bullying at some time in their four years of schooling. The problem persists online and behind a screen. The stereotypical image of a “bully” is a big mean peer that might ask for an underclass men’s lunch money. This is not the case in our day and age.…
Children are bullied through harassment, being picked on and made to feel insecure by other peers due to their physical appearance, choices of friends, gender or gender identification, and/or other differences. Discussion 1: Moral Development Theory and Bullying Children start from the early to “self-regulate” their characters when raised by parents that impact an honest lifestyle in their lives by also, consistently rewarding them when they portrayed good character and punished them when they misbehaved. However, when children exposed to a pattern of morally acceptable character and not trained up among the group of liars or cheaters that will enable those well-developed self-regulatory mechanisms to cause them to take responsibility for their actions than to disengage morally, but will likely act in a morally acceptable ways (Zastrow & Krist-Ashman, p. 350, 2016). Accordingly, Crick and Dodge (1999) defined bullying as a form of proactive aggression…
As we become more knowledgeable on the subject of bullying, we can notice how the effects it has on both the victim and the bully can be dangerous. In his article, “Bullying”, John Greenya suggests that the connection between bullying and school violence has become a growing problem that schools aren't doing enough to prevent. He does this by first explaining that “today, bullying is widely regarded as a serious problem in the United States”, then by stating “bullying not only begets depression and suicide but also serious crime, researchers say, not to mention poor academic performance, truancy and higher dropout rates” (Greenya). Greenya finally describes how “in the past, bullying has simply been dismissed as ‘Kids will be kids,’ but the findings from this study suggest that…
