Martin Luther King Junior once stated that “true peace is not merely the absence of tension, it is the presence of justice.” With this, it has been known that authors possess their own views of what individuals represent within a society, where there is tension between the majority and the individual. The works of “Once Upon A Time”, by Nadine Gordimer, “The Wife’s Story” by Ursula K. Le Guin, and the motion picture Invictus, directed by Clint Eastwood, all share a common underlying theme, or life lesson that is portrayed through a median. The common theme is that although it may be tempting to merge with the remainder of society, you must be who you truly are. To develop this theme, the authors place many symbols within their creation as…
I'm Amanda Stark, but most call me Mandy. I have light fair skin, a heart-shaped dimple ridden face, icy blue eyes and pin straight long blackish-red hair that goes down to my knees. My height is 5'8 and 160 Ibs. My parents are Tony Stark and Pepper Stark (Née) Potts. I use an arc reactor like my dad because of my heart stopping when I was a baby.…
“Shhh! You have to be quiet or it will hear us!” “Sorry!” We have now been trapped inside this mountain for two days. We’ve already eaten the last of our granola bars that we packed, thinking that we would be home in six hours, not stranded out here for days.…
The beating of the drums woke her with a start. The festival of Aeroas was to begin and she would be late. The late ones are never picked, everyone knows that. By the time she’d left her home the bone-rattling beat had settled and only a thin twang rumbled in the air. Still, in her nightgown, the girl slipped past the people of the crowd, cutting her way to the front.…
Arkney was a minuscule farming village, located in the very middle of Garthram, the middle of nowhere. There wasn’t anything spectacular about it. the village’s anonymity couldn’t protect them from a certain somebody. Twin children sat upon the rolling green hills, picking the white flowers that grew there.…
Another thing that surprised me about this story was that Jenny and her wife Grace stayed together after the changes. Although, I think it is really special that they could make it work despite the choice to become Jenny. Grace realized that Jenny was still the same person she fell in love with, and decided that this meant she could still love him no matter what. Grace states in her own epilogue, "We didn't stay together only for the children. We stayed together for each other.…
“Hey its Amanda Maldonado with your Trendy Topics” Im here to tell you the myth is true. The camera does indeed add ten ponds to your face. Through my various segments on my schools news channel I have learned this lesson the hard way. Obesession, in either extreme, is bad.…
Frankenstein Alternate Ending The machine was whirring quietly as Victor worked shakily. The machine was quite large, looming taller than Victor himself. It was beside a table that laid the soon to be bride of the creature, draped under a cloth. A cascading of flips and switches were being made by Victor as he worked fearfully and restlessly.…
The short story A & P, written by John Updike, is different because of the way that Updike is able to write in present and past tense from the perspective of a teenager thinking back to his days working in a grocery store. The story is about some girls who walk into the store wearing nothing but their bathing suits. These girls draw everybody’s attention away from their work and onto them simply because of the way that they’re dressed. Besides the distraction, most of the conflict does not occur until the store manager notices the girls and scolds them about their attire. The comedic patter of the story is very evident with the way the narrator gives the girls and others in the store little nicknames that are almost somewhat offensive.…
Louis was almost too fixated to notice that Harry had sat down on his mattress opposite Louis. The green eyed lad just sat there for a moment, every now and again his mouth opening, then shutting again as if trying to spit out the words which were obviously on the tip of his tongue. “Do you want to talk about what happened? I’ve heard that talking through things makes it better, we could try that?”…
AP English IV Compare and Contrast Essay In Karen Van der Zee’s novel, A Secret Sorrow , and Gail Godwin’s short story,” A Sorrowful Woman”, both scenarios are focused on certain ideas of marriage and family. Although, the two stories couldn’t be any more different from each other in terms of what should happen and what actually is. Van der Zee portrays married life as a wonderful experience, including a happy marriage complete with children. Faye, the central character in A Secret Sorrow, wants the fairytale, story book marriage and sees it as her main source of happiness. For the unknown wife in Godwin’s “A Sorrowful Woman”, her marriage and family are no longer making her happy, causing her to become disheartened and eventually leads…
