The beating of the drums woke her with a start. The festival of Aeroas was to begin and she would be late. The late ones are never picked, everyone knows that. By the time she’d left her home the bone-rattling beat had settled and only a thin twang rumbled in the air. Still, in her nightgown, the girl slipped past the people of the crowd, cutting her way to the front. The front was where all the other girls of the sandy village gathered. There upon a floating rug sat the boy king. He had a sickly smile, like that of a snake.
His eyes met hers, for a brief flickering second, and the girl shivered in distaste. His eyes were clouded and watery. The girl looked around in confusion, and a thick meaty hand pushed her forward. The boy king ordered his carpet to lower and beckoned the girl to sit by him. The boy’s skin held this angry light inside it, so he glowed a light reddish orange. He looked like something from the Otherworld. The carpet settled beneath the glowing child. He stole the crowd’s attention, and they stand like stone statues.
“We must go,” the boy king softly tells the girl. The king’s guards spring to life. They surround the young couple, creating a formidable fence of silver scimitars. The girl’s mother squeezed her way to the front, knocking some of the girls to the ground. The girl’s eyes met her

Reconciliation Interrupted by the faint sounds of birds chirping and grass swaying in the gentle breeze, the calming silence became a distant memory. As the birds flapped their wings, moving at the edge of the tiny meadow, from one tree to the next, they cast their shadows over the body of a small brown skinned, black haired girl. She lay on her back in the hilltop grass, facing directly up towards the almost blinding light of the afternoon sun. Her dark skin, holding a lively warm glow, reflected the rays of sunlight off of her quickly flickering eyelids. Suddenly, they were open, revealing her dark brown almond shaped eyes and her ever so slightly off white sclera.…
