He staggered to his feet, tensed for more terror, and looked up at a huge peaked cap. It was a white-topped cap, and above the green shade of the peak was a crown, an anchor, and gold foliage. He saw white drills, epaulets, a revolver, a row of gilt buttons down the front of a uniform. A naval officer stood on the sand, looking down at Ralph in wary astonishment. “An adult” - a sham. A real adult?” Ralph thought to himself, frantically looking up at the man. He winced his eyes, just now reacting to the bright scene of beautiful light reflecting off the surface of the water on the shore of the beach. He had never really taken the time to look around the beach, not in the way he was now, at least, as well as he had come to realize how peaceful the beach was. The air hung heavy with the eerie metallic scent of blood, and Ralph's wide eyes reflected the disbelief and helplessness that gripped his soul. The battlefield echoed with the silence of impending doom as he lay there, a wounded prey at the mercy of those around him. His eyes fixed on the sky, he could feel the warmth of the sun fading away.
