Altering Images And Our Minds: Article Analysis

Decent Essays
In my opinion, the altering of images within magazines is very harmful and misleading to the young population today. It is very disturbing to see a 12 year old looking up to an altered image of a model and taking that image as their role model. I am totally against this misleading act. According to the article, "Photoshopping: Altering Images and Our Minds," there is a 119 percent increase in the number of children under age 12 that were hospitalized due to an eating disorder between 1990 and 2006. This static right here should be enough to stop this horrible practice. It is ruining the minds of little innocent children. These kids shouldn't be worrying about what their body looks like at age 12.

Do Photoshopped Pictures Hurt Teens? Magazines often use Photoshop to make pictures of celebrities and models look perfect. I think magazines should stop using Photoshop because some teens feel terrible when they see their favorite celebrity looking better than them. The first reason is the teen girls say they want magazines to stop using Photoshop because they feel substandard when they compare their pictures with celebrities. Another reason is, in a recent survey, 80 percent of teen girls said they compare themselves to the photos of celebrities and made them feel unsatisfactory.…

This is a growing issue with children and adolescents. I learned from Source C that, “more than half of girls and one-third of boys as young as 6 to 8 think their ideal weight is thinner than their current size.” Children at this age are very easily influenced, so when you hand a little girl a Barbie doll she might start to wonder why her stomach isn’t as flat as Barbie’s and why her thighs are touching but Barbie’s aren’t. A report discussed in Source C also said that “by age 7, one in four kids has engaged in some kind of dieting behavior.” This is because of the unrealistic beauty standards set by society.…

The great singer, songwriter Alicia Keys said something that really touched me is”There’s too much darkness in the world. Everywhere you turn someone is trying to someone else down.” I am sad to say that i have to agree with what she said because for one, when people look at these photos in magazines and on social media they pick out flaws about themselves that they want to change. Two,I believe that you should always love yourself and how you look. And lastly,I know many people in the world[not personally]have problems with being insecure mostly when looking these photos.…

Well, many people don't agree with this statement. The counterclaim against my argument is that people shouldn't be allowed magazines if they are gullible enough to believe that it’s real. The people should know that a twelve inch waist isn't realistic and airbrushed skin isn't actually flawless like the editors say. The thing is, many young people don't. If you go to a local drugstore and look at the magazine section you can notice that almost all the magazines are targeted to teens and young adults.…

These images are unhealthy for young men and women because these kids and young adults will grow up thinking they have to look like a model to be pretty which causes them to do harmful things to themselves. Beginning with 40,000 year-old, prehistoric cave paintings, humans have used images to communicate (Ocean Media). Even after the invention of written language, pictures have retained their singular power as the most effective form of emotional communication for the masses. In advertising, a picture truly is worth a thousand words. And, photographs are among the most potent images of all. Advertising “asks [the viewer] to go somewhere, do something, try something, buy something, accept some single idea, add a new word—generally a product’s trade name to [their] vocabulary, and associate positive images with that word” (Jamieson and Campbell 318).…

Not only is it affecting the women that want to look like the dream girl, but also affecting the women who are portraying the unrealistic images. Once a model wrote on Ellen Stewarts blog was, “Being a model isn't as glamorous as the media makes it out to be... Worst decision I ever made. It has destroyed me” It has destroyed them physically because earlier a statistic said that a model and 99% of her friends have eating disorders. I mean I understand if someone has a blemish on their face or a scratch, then I think that is fine to cover up. But, changing someone’s waist size or the color of their skin is wrong because it is completely and totally false advertising. While about 160,000 minimally invasive procedures were performed, just on teens. With makeup, people can see that it’s there with their bare eyes, but with photoshop you don’t know what is real. When seeing an advertisement the “retouched photos set an unrealistic bar for suggestible young girls, and therefore cry out to be exposed” (Fortini). Anybody is able to use makeup to make themselves pretty, but with photoshop you’re essentially changing the whole body and turning it into a new person. It’s not healthy for this to be shown to young girls who will believe anything they see. In an article I read by Debra Bass she said “yes, body image is a serious concern for young girls.…
