David Winter, author of Believing the Bible, discusses this connection people make with their religion. He talks about sacred scriptures and how the stories that lie within them hold valuable lessons and words of wisdom; but what Winters wants his readers to understand is that those scriptures should not be taken literally or word for word. They should be read with open minds that will then help create general lessons and messages to follow. He encourages readers to question what they are reading and reflect on how those messages can be applied to their lives (19). Questioning scriptures makes it very hard for people to fall into conformity because they are choosing to not simply agree with what the scripture is saying, but instead having them search for hidden or obscure messages within the text. This skill can help people discover who they are and what they believe in because when reading other scriptures, it tests your beliefs or what you think to believe in. Reading those stories can either solidify your beliefs or make you realize that what you thought you believed in was not actually what you believed in. This creates an overall sense of identity because you can now know what you believe in and what you

The legacy of residential school has enabled and limited an entire generation of Indigenous people from being able to effectively pass down information that is integral to their culture. Due to this fact, it has become imperative that other forums of information sharing are developed, in order to support and share what information is left of indigenous culture. However, at the same time, this new forum that is developed must show full respect for Indigenous culture and tradition, while properly engaging todays youth and those who may not have any prior exposure to Indigenous culture. This is made even more difficult when one factors in the effects of modern social media, as well as other outlets that distract and obstruct Indigenous youth from…

We do not need other people in order to understand ourselves because we can grow from the experiences we have intrapersonally rather than interpersonally. Personal identity is a common philosophical struggle that humans face. What makes us who we are, and why are we here are two crucial questions we have debated over since the dawn of civilization. From birth, we are constantly gaining experience and knowledge not only to survive but also to create our own world-view. Even though we are complex creatures, we have a tendency to categorize the world around us into simple boxes. When a new topic is introduced which doesn’t already fit in one of our boxes, we are offset by this idea.…
