In this essay, I will be analysing the three act structure of ‘Almost Famous’, a film by Cameron Crowe (2000). A film about a music driven journalist,who is requested to write an article for ‘Rolling Stone Magazine’ and finds himself and experiences eye opening events, while touring with an almost famous band.
Syd Field, author of Screenplay and The Screen Writer's Workbook, has outlined a paradigm that most screenplays follow. A paradigm is a conceptual scheme. Syd Field has divided screenplay into three structures; Act 1 (set-up), Act 2 (confrontation) and Act 3 (resolution). Writing of “San Diego, 1969”, presenting the setting and time. We get more information about William and his mother’s relationship. They are very close and we can see that William is a well educated boy. When they are home, we see William standing by his mother’s side, while she is cooking. Anita, William’s sister, then tries to sneak into the house, but doesn’t succeed. Elaine then confronts Anita about where she has been and tells Anita that she knows that she’s been kissing and takes the Simon and Garfunkel vinyl that Anita was trying to hide under her black coat. Anita complains that it is unfair that they cannot listen to their music and that it is poetry, but her mother is against it. Pinch one is when William approaches Russel for the second time. William wants to start working on the interview, but Russel is in a hotel room with Penny Lane, clearly not bothered about the Rolling Stone article. William gets miserable, he is trying to stay professional and follow Bangs’ advice “they are not you friends”. This pinch reminds us that William is battling to overcome the obstacles that prevents him from achieving his wishes to write the perfect article for Rolling
