Tying in with what was discussed above, this can be achieved by education. I know for a fact that I was ignorant to the idea of allyship coming into my first quarter of college as a freshman, and I am positive the same goes for next year’s incoming class as well. To me, an inclusive community consists of a diverse range of individuals who are able to acknowledge and recognize their differences, but come together to support one another and work together to achieve common goals. In the instance that I become a Residential Advisor, I would work together with my staff to create plans in hopes of educating residents on the importance of allyship and the determinants on microaggressions. Starting off, it is critical to build a community regardless, so I would start off by forming connections with each individual in my learning-living community, and providing programs in attempt to spark connections between residents, in order to create a sense of comfortability and respect.
