If a picture says a thousand words, so how many words does a meme equal? Numerous people in today’s society are not in favor of the Obama era, so various jokes and stabs in the form of memes are targeted toward our 44th president. The memes listed above are both categorized as amusing because of several unique factors that we will discuss later, and how these details allow them to be entertaining. This paper shall explore how the fun factor is achieved by the history of the allusions featured, the types of humor used, and the audience of these memes. “Grumpy Cat” is “the nickname given to Tartar Sauce, a snowshoe cat that rose to online fame after several pictures of her annoyed facial expressions were posted” online (Brad). But, the official allusion in that meme is Obama; by blaming “Grumpy Cats” facial expression on his job as president. “Thanks, Obama!” is a sarcastic expression used by critics of President Barack Obama to blame personal troubles and inconveniences on public policies supported or enacted by the administration” (Don). Moreover, despite the different formats both memes allude to belief that President Obama is doing a horrendous job in office. These two memes are in a category of humor called low humor, which carries no intellectual appeal and employs humor that is over-the-top or unsubtle nature. However there are several sub-genres in the low comedy range like farce and travesty, furthermore our memes fall into those two classifications. The “Grumpy Cat” meme is a farce because the author deliberately provoked laughter by highly exaggerating the caricature of Obama. They artificially Obama’s persona by stating that Barack Obama is so atrocious that the only reason “Grumpy Cat” is grumpy is because of our President. The meme about Hannah Montana and President Bush not only falls under the farce region but also falls under the travesty category. It’s considered a travesty because the quote illustrates Hannah Montana, which is considered a cultural production. Since a cultural production is being mentioned this work is thought to be a travesty because a travesty is a type of low humor that mocks a particular literary work or cultural production.
