Additionally, they are not afraid to show their true self and risk getting hurt, and that vulnerability is crucial to a person’s growth. It is vital for stable connections, because once it is severed, it is extremely hard to recover from it. The importance of being honest with one’s self and others is paramount. Many people mistake the word “integrity” to hold the same weight as the word “honesty;” however, Oxford Dictionary defines integrity as: “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.” Therefore, we can conclude that being honest is only a part of having integrity, so just because someone says what he or she means, doesn’t mean that this person has integrity. In “The Insufficiency of Honesty,” Stephen L. Carter discusses the misconception that many people have about the difference between honesty and integrity by presenting examples of how people that are completely honest lack a sense of moral behavior. Through a clearly reasoned discussion, Carter raises some insightful points about how honesty alone cannot make someone or some action morally correct.…

What is the ideal person? Depending the people asked, the majority of people’s opinions will differ. During the time of the enlightenment and colonial periods, there were three men who wrote popular books that defined what an ideal person was, Niccolò Machiavelli, Baldassare Castiglione and George Washington. Machiavelli was a military advisor when Lorenzo de Medici was temporarily excommunicated from Florence. Machiavelli grew up under the Medici rule, but he saw the instability in government when others didn’t.…

In modern times, people claim that, “Chivalry is dead,” but are people aware of what chivalry means, or what the chivalry code is? Between 1170 and 1220, knights developed a chivalric code, or a code of conduct, for themselves and important men to follow. The code had six main rules that helped guide citizens in living a helpful and fulfilled life. Unfortunately, the chivalry code is not used or followed like it was many years ago. The chivalry code can still be used today, especially these rules: honor truth by word and deed, be faithful to one lady, and abide to the laws of your country or region.…

Regular people can also use deception and lie to other people. Some who seem honest are still being deceptive because they hid their true intentions. These people don’t appear to be presenting false or altered information, but there is a difference between honesty and integrity. Honesty is simply not telling a lie, while integrity is knowing what is the right thing to do. “A person may be entirely honest without ever engaging in the hard work of discernment that integrity requires” (Carter 364).…

Throughout the history of the United States and other parts of the world, a high percentage of people tend to not be able to tell the truth when they are asked simple questions by members of their family or by their close friends. As telling the truth may have consequences, telling lies may have deeper consequences that cannot only hurt the person telling the lie, but it can affect the person being lied to.
