The refugee crisis has become catastrophic since the unrest in the Middle East began; the United States and other Western nations have an obligation, both moral and political, to allow reasonable migration to their countries for refugees.
Since the attacks on September 11th, the United States has resettled nearly 800,000 refugees. Among those resettled, only three people have been arrested for planning, not committing, a terrorist attack (Newland). Newland goes on to say, “... and it is worth noting two were not planning an attack in the United States and the plans of the third were barely credible.” According to World Vision, half of Syrian refugees are children. Screening alone can take from 18 months to two years (Daniels). p“They’re [then] checked against at least three departments of government databases…” (Ahmed and Petrohilos). Displaced people are not just being let into the country. They are subject to a profound screening process before being granted refugee status to live in the United States (Ahmed and Petrohilos). The UN High Commissioner for Refugees refers candidates to the government after a background check. Then, the Department of Homeland Security and several other federal agencies screen refugees through counterterrorism databases to verify their legitimacy (Daniels). “Federal funds support those who need assistance for only the first seven or eight months of residence” (Newland). Refugees bring in more wealth, and many r have contributed to the US economy. Notable refugees that changed the United States include Albert Einstein and Sergey Brin, the co founder of Google (Newland). “Many of them will earn low pay in America’s labor market – at least initially – but an influx of lower-skilled workers could actually help Americans with less skill. The United States does not have a fixed supply of jobs. By working in the United States and consuming goods and services, more jobs will be created to supply them” (Nowrasteh). Refugees will add to the economy and they will contribute skills and wealth to the country.
Allowing the sensible resettlement of refugees will have many positive effects on the United States. It will bring economic and cultural benefits that will ultimately shape the country for the better. Ignoring the problem and letting innocent people die has proven to have disastrous consequences. By allowing the migration of refugees, the country can set an example for the rest of the world and show that human compassion can change
