The poem illustrates the difficulty of making decisions and the consequences of that decision. The poet effectively uses the poetic devices, imagery, alliteration, and allusion to portray the central theme of making decisions. The first line, “venomous lies, attacks you anonymously” bring forth the allusion of snakes. Snakes are considered to be full of lies and betrayals. In the Bible, the snake gave Eve a choice to eat the fruit of knowledge and Eve took the fruit of knowledge and shared it with her husband Adam. Which later caused God to cast them out of the garden of Eden. This shows that lies force people to make decisions, and all decisions have consequences. But, in fact, it is a warning. It is like sugar-coated poison to make it seem harmless. It’s a silent warning that goes unnoticed. The last line, “she is drowning in a sea of grief” creates an imagery. The “drowning” makes it sound like she is weeping, and have been for a while. It ends on a sad note that will make the reader wonder about the poem and have a great effect on him or her about making a decision.

The novel Allegiant by Veronica Roth portrays the theme of choices. The theme revolves around making choices and how the consequences affect the characters of the novel.
