Ginsberg, Burroughs and Kerouac met at Columbia University in 1943. At the time, they were considered "subversive" for their views and behavior. They exchanged anti-establishment ideas which became the beginning of the beat movement. During his stay at Columbia, Ginsberg was prosecuted for possession of stolen goods and pleaded insanity and then spent time in a mental institution.
