“I had a lot of growing up to do. a lot of times, I learned the hard way.” Allen Iverson’s life is inspirational to me. He changed the way the game is played. Allen brought culture to the game. Coming from the hood and making his dreams come true. Watching Iverson is what made me the player I am today. Allen Ezail Iverson was born June 7, 1975 in Hampton, Virginia. Ann Iverson, only fifteen years old and left alone by Iverson biological father. Allen’s struggle started early, his mother being a single mom had a hard time making ends meet. Ann always reminded her son that things would get better and nothing was out of his reach if he gave his all. Iverson happened to be one of the coolest players of all time. No one was bring culture to basketball until Iverson. He changed the game for many more years to come. Inspiring generations of basketball players like me. We wouldn't have the courage to wear arm sleeves, or even glorify tattoos. Not only that, cornrows, jewelry, all of the hip-hop culture was transferred and embedded into the NBA for what looks to be as forever. “ We wouldn't see guys like Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, etc…, pulling off crazy crossovers and nifty passes if it wasn’t for “The Answer” himself.” Lance Rickshaw, from Bleacher Report stated. (Rickshaw.) “He was the man on the bench with big diamond encrusted earrings and necklaces.” A.I. brang attention to himself, both positive and negative. Iverson’s cultural movement seemed to concern the NBA. “It could have led to racial outbreaks all across the league, which if you think about it, it would've been absolutely terrible.”(Kavern.) NBA commissioner David Stern said. Not many people know, but Allen Iverson always helped his community. Iverson wasnt just your regular celebrity, he cared about his people. “When A.I. was connected to his community. He wasnt the type of person you would have to go a game to see him. He’d be at any spot his people would go.” A.I. started a charitable organization to encourage young people on making the best life decisions. Iverson’s website( alleniverson3.net) explains, “The Choose Life Foundation was established to raise awareness on the importance of learning how to experience life the right way.”(Moore management & entertainment LLC.) Iverson knew what it was like being a kid from the hood. He could be relatable to the young kids growing up, which gives them sense of hope that they have control of their own lives.
