Atticus is elected the town defendant and take his job to the next level, defending everybody who asked him or was assigned to him. This is not what made him a great man though. Him being a lawyer who defends people shows his caring and protective nature. In the south, white trash was above those of a colored race, so defending a black man and actually attempting to defend him is virtually unheard of. He spends countless hours studying the case, developing counter arguments, doing everything in his power to stop the Ewells from sending him off to prison. To prove his point in the case, he talks about Mayella’s bruise on her right eye. Now for someone to hit the right side of your face, they would have to be left handed. So when Atticus asks Tom to catch a glass with his left hand, Tom replies that he can’t. When Tom was a young boy, he got his arm caught in a cotton gin. This crippled his arm for the rest of his life. There for, Tom couldn’t have beaten Mayella. This just goes to show Atticus’s protective and caring
