Poetry Analysis: “All Too Well”
Ten-time Grammy winner Taylor Alison Swift is one of the most accomplished artists in the world with four multiplatinum albums. Swift was born in Pennsylvania on December 13, 1989. At the young age of five, she began writing songs and at twelve, she learned to play the guitar in just a few hours. At thirteen, Swift began searching for a record label to sign her; she had trouble due to her young age, but finally, at just sixteen years old Swift was signed onto Big Machine Records and released her self-titled debut album. Her hit single “Tim McGraw” was on the Top 10 charts for country music as soon as it came out and would remain there for weeks. Her next …show more content…
In the song, Swift describes the early stages of the relationship using the simile, “autumn leaves falling down like pieces into place”, which can be assumed to mean how complete and whole she felt while with him while also referencing the time frame, which would be autumn (Stanza 2, verse 3). Throughout the song, Swift repeats the phrase “I remember it all too well”, basically enforcing her feelings that this relationship was impossible to forget and she remembers every detail clearly because that is how much it had an impact on her life (Stanzas 4, 5, 6, 7, 8). She further enforces the statement by adding lines such as “I can picture it after all these days” and “’cause there we are again” (stanza 2, verse 3; stanza 4, verse 1). She also mentions the heartbreaking details she remembers, such as “in the middle of the night, we dance around the kitchen in the refrigerator light” which cleverly uses rhyme in “night” and “light” to add some flow to the lyric (stanza 8, verse 2). “We’re singing in the car, getting lost Upstate”, “you almost ran the red ‘cause you were looking over at me”, “I left my scarf there at your sister’s house”, are all lines that reinforce the idea that Swift was able to remember the tiniest specifics about their …show more content…
She uses some rhyme; “red” and “bed”, “night” and “light”, “own and “alone”, “hair” and “there”, “rare” and there” (stanza 5; stanza 8; stanza 12; stanza 12; stanza 14). However, the most prominent sound device she utilizes is assonance—“through” and “you”, “long” and “gone”, “like” and “find”, “days” and “made”, “hair” and “stairs”—and repetition, aforementioned. At the very end of the song, Swift repeats the phrase “you remember it all”, most likely to remind the listeners that she’s not the only one that is hurting and that Gyllenhaal probably feels exactly the same way (stanza 14). Overall, “All Too Well” is an in-depth peek inside of Swift’s past relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal that perfectly encompasses the agony and heartbreak of losing someone you love and being unable to move on with your life because of it.
