It is said in the bible: “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). The beatitudes, blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy and blessed are the mourn, for they shall be comforted, go hand in hand when looking at this bible passage as well as the memoir, Left to Tell, by Immaculée Ilibagiza. Immaculée, the woman who follows the Rwandan genocide demonstrates and follows the beatitudes throughout her whole life, but more so, throughout the genocide itself. Many of her examples help me live my own life by following the beatitudes as well.
The beatitude “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” is first shown when Immaculée and the women she hid with in the bathroom, head to the French camp. They hear of other horror stories when meeting the other survivors. They see the ruins of their once beautiful country right before their very eyes which has been torn to rumble. At one point, Immaculée speaks to Jean Paul about the events of the genocide, ““The genocide is happening in people’s hearts… The killers are good people, but right now evil has a hold on their hearts” (Ilibagiza, 144). Jean Paul cannot understand the genocide like Immaculée does. She explains that everyone is good in their hearts, but they…
