Waitress Dance Concert Report

I will start this by being brutally honest, I tend to indulge myself in things others would refer to as “mushy crap”; ice cream, boy bands, badly written romance novels, all things I enjoy, along with Waitress. The musical based closely off of a 2007 film of the same name, opened on Broadway in April of 2016 and has been experiencing a successful run so far, with a tour scheduled for 2017. I had the pleasure of seeing Waitress this summer, in early July and, admittedly, shed a tear or two, or twenty. The journey to Broadway began with a workshop in 2014. The workshop was in New York and featured Jessie Mueller, Keala Settle, and Barrett Wilbert Weed. After positive reviews, “Waitress” shifter to the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, …show more content…
This is used in moments of intense anger or intense pleasure, fantasizing leaving her husband or being with her lover, creating a fool’s paradise. The element of dance is added beautifully in a fully realized vision of light and movement. The choreography is fairly clean and simple, with dances only used to further imply when Jenna is daydreaming or to add movement to some of the more upbeat songs of the production. The change from realism to dance during Jenna’s fantasies is a bold and useful choice, clarifying the differences for the audience, and adding to the character. Reading a bit into this choice, it may be something of note that Jenna is usually being picked up and moved around the stage, like a pawn or prop. This may be to show that she is not in control, or perhaps that she cannot reach her goals on her own. Lorin Latarro’s choreography is smart and it adds to the beautiful environment “Waitress” already creates with its fun backdrop as an independent diner, checkerboard floors and all. The set uses light and fun colors to show a traditional 50’s style diner, which makes sense for its traditional chick-flick style of

Overall, this show was fantastic. It had the element of audience interaction that not many plays really have and if they do, no theatre has it down like Pocket Sandwich. Before the show they have someone that greets you with a medium sized boat of popcorn that any newcomer would think to eat. They have more intentions for the popcorn than you’d generally expect, they actually want you to save it all and throw it at the cast members! Before the play began there was an actress that announced how we should properly throw popcorn at the cast members and what the general rules of thumb were for certain situations.…

One of the stand out technical features of this production was the set. Its softened pale hues from the apartment to the staircases allowed for the vintage aesthetic to truly transport the audience back to the roaring twenties. Glenelg Country School’s production of “The Drowsy Chaperone” captures how the magic of theatre can truly transport you to another…

Very few famous performers nowadays can integrate showmanship with their music. In the 70’s a musical group by the name of Parliament took the music world by storm with their out of this world appearance and their own rendition of Funk music. Parliament was one of the key pieces in the development of funk music and modern music as well. They created what we know as P-Funk today that was a key element of the foundation of Hip-Hop. For my concert report I analyzed Parliament’s 1976…

My expectations walking towards the production for “Betty’s Diner” were not very high. I was not looking forward to seeing the play because I really dislike musicals. The singing after every six minutes bored me as a child watching movie musicals so why would I want to watch them now? As a kid I was unable to watch “High School Musical” and most other musical movies because the singing absolutely annoyed me whenever a character felt any type of emotion. All of my experiences of past musicals had clouded my mind making me not want watch the play.…

Her choreography expresses many emotions, and tells us a story what it means. Looking at her choreograph, it is apparent to know what the body language want the audience to see. For example, the way she moves around with the cloth in her arm in the Lamentation. The body language is telling the audience she is trapped into her own struggles. When the dancer was down, her body forms a turtle shape.…

While she’s working as a waitress her manager Stu, is constantly on them about not relaxing or taking breaks. He forces them to work even when there is no one in the restaurant. Many people are working multiple jobs just to receive a lousy pay of less than $2 an hour. Barbara describes an experience of where she was working as a waitress trying to take an extremely difficult and specific order from a group of men while on the other hand she had various tables demanding orders be taken right that very moment. The ideological concept of depression is a heavy topic worth a significant amount of conversation due to the rising prevalence in current society. Although thrown around frequently in common conversation, technically “Depression is a medical illness accompanied by symptoms of fatigue, sadness, self-limiting attitude, neglect, disability, guilt, etc” (Singh 3). All of these feelings are commonly shown in dance, evolving along with the evolution of societal standards. The choreography in both “Spectre-1914” by Martha Graham and the music video for “Elastic Heart” by Sia explore the topic of depression through movement, set design, and time frame. The movement for both pieces show extreme heartache and despair, but Graham’s movement is much…

When the word “home” is defined in a dictionary you are given definitions like “the place in which one’s domestic affections are centered” or “any place of residence or refuge” but to me home means so much more. To me, home is theatre. Those who know me well will attest that the change in me throughout this experience is drastic. Theatre transports me to places I couldn’t dream of otherwise and two years ago, I was taken to a place that would change my life forever and theatre transformed to the place I call home. Thoughts and ideas flooded my mind as I stepped into the off-green colored cafeteria.…

His use of the term “pivots” (2) suggests that her movements are efficient and mechanical rather than natural, and that she spends no more time than is necessary at his table. As he repeats three times that she smiles at him, he conveys the sense that her smiles are automatic and part of her waitress persona rather than indicative of any genuine pleasure in his presence. He also mentions that she brings him a menu, brings bread in a basket and refills his wine glass, actions that she has no doubt repeated for countless customers. The routine leads him to liken her to “every waitress/who has ever served me,/and every waiter, too” (17-19). In these repetitive acts, she loses her individuality and becomes merely the type of server, whether male or female.…

On December 2nd, 2016 at the Constance theatre the dance department presented a show called Agbedidi. The show, directed and choreographed by Mohamed DaCosta and Trent D. Williams, Jr., displayed a combination of Traditional African and Contemporary Dance. The house buzzed with excitement as the start of the show approached. It is quite encouraged to see such a large audience at an event, but this audience also brought a positive, vibrant atmosphere for the dancers to soak up. I was curious to see what this year’s performance would look like.…

April 29th 1996, Broadway’s Nederland theatre is sold out to capacity and the audience is gritting their teeth with excitement, but an overture is nowhere to be heard, the curtains are missing and the haphazardly placed lighting rigs have not yet dimmed. All at once, the stage erupts with cast members running in-between and out of the industrial themed set, a strum of a guitar is heard and a critically acclaimed overnight sensation is born in the image of Jonathon Larson. Adapted from the popular opera La Bohème, Rent the musical was created in the hopes of representing the minute bohemian culture of New York City at the end of the 20 century who were confronted with impoverishment, HIV and homosexuality. Going against traditional musical theatre…
