Female Characters in our lives and in Literature
Okay, so this blog post isn't about Hermione Granger from Harry Potter, but we can all agree that she is portrayed as a strong female character in the series. She pursues her goals, takes on a troll by herself, recognizes the way Elves are treated and starts a campaign, and grows up to be proud young woman.
Historically, females have been treated poorly, valued for their appearance and ability to do housework and please men. It was an unfortunate reality and problems still exist today. In our current age, strong female characters are becoming more apparent in many types of literature and in our own lives.

Despair and fear were the two words I thought of when I learned that she became blind at the age of six. I absolutely fear being blind and I am willing to bet many others would be too. However, Marie-Laure faces her blindness and triumphs. In Paris and even in Saint-Malo, she learns how to differentiate between one building and another, how many steps to take, and even what scents are related to what areas. And after seeing Madame Manec's courageous act of rebellion, Marie-Laure also joins and helps to take back their country. After finishing the novel, I really respect Marie-Laure for her bravery and strong will.

The Unfortunate
The reality of war, is that everyone is affected. During war and after.
In 1945, when Germany was invaded and being pushed into a corner, the women in Berlin feared the Russians and the "vengeance they will seek", when they come. In this chapter, the value of females is shown when Jutta (Werner's younger sister) hears "mothers are drowning daughters" and "rubbing granddaughters in feces, sawing their hair off with bread knives, anything to make them less appealing to the Russians." (489) It frustrated me to read this part, but the inevitable happens and four female side characters are raped. None of them were "older than sixteen" (490) and they could not fight back.
