While the children are waiting for the sun to come out a boy by the name of William, begins to harass Margot, “He gave her a shove.” They think of her as less than them, because she will not play games or sing songs in class. The situation quickly escalates and the other children grab her and throw her in a closet, “They stood looking at the door and saw it tremble from her beating and throwing herself against it. They heard muffled cries. Then, smiling they turned and went out and back down the tunnel, just as the teacher arrived. “ The children are so consumed by their desire to make themselves feel like they are better than Margot that they need to deprive her of something she has waited years for. Margot remembers the sun, and the other children think that makes her better than them, so they feel that they have to show that she is not better than them by mistreating and bullying …show more content…
She writes a poem about what the sun looks like, , this makes the children feel more resentment towards her. They do not remember the sun and she talks about what it looks like and how it feels. To the children it sounds like she is bragging and trying to make them feel bad, when really she is just reminiscing. The way she talks about the sun makes the feel even more jealous, and is another reason they act out against her. They are constantly reminded that the one thing that they want she has experienced and remembered and it is making them jealous of
