All Summer In A Day Analysis

“All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury, is a science fiction short story. Bradbury included a one of a kind setting, superior characterization, and an ending that allowed readers to create their own, using their imagination. The setting was unique and I would have never thought of an imaginable place like Venus. Margot is a shy and frail young girl and we notice this when Bradbury describes that she is an “old photograph” and talks like a “ghost.” Over the years, good short stories and novels have been transitioned into movie adaptation. Usually, the short stories and novels are far more interesting than the movie, but rarely, the movie might be more intriguing. But producers usually change the way a character acts, or they add an entire different ending, maybe because there is more action in the movie than from the original short-story or novel. In “All Summer in a Day,” Bradbury describes his setting using similes and metaphors. For example, “ It was a nest of octopi, clustering up great arms of flesh-like weed,wavering,flowering this brief spring.” When I read this line, I imagined a jungle with so many tall trees and plants, so tall, you could barely see the sky as you went in. Using the metaphors and similes that are included in “All Summer in a Day,” helps us create a vivid image in our head whereas the movie, the setting was nothing like the short story. The underground homes of the children wasn’t “underground.” In the movie, the children would run outside in the rain and play games. Speaking of rain, the rain wasn’t pouring as hard as I thought it would be. And lastly, the movie didn’t even incorporate the jungle!
