Grant Morrison once said, “Superman is us, in our dreams. He lives our lives but on an epic canvas”. In light of the Golden Age, Superman was an iconic hero with unlimited abilities that could solve real life issues. He embodied the superhero archetype, fighting crime for the greater good of society, saving the damsel in distress and wielding boundless power. With the launch of Superman in 1938, Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster catalyzed what is today known as, the Golden Age. In All Star Superman, Grant Morrison attempts to synthesis previous Superman stories and interpretations by creating a timeless piece. In issue #1 of the series, Superman was given a death sentence after venturing too close to the sun. Superman is fighting the clock as there are twelve issues in the series which symbolizes the amount of months Superman has left to live (Terzian). Superman’s impending death constructs him as very human-like along with the contrasting physical and emotional traits of Superman and …show more content…
Morrison brings back focus to the original while giving the reader a very fresh take on that makes Superman more relatable to the reader. Morrison’s death sentence causes Superman to get his affairs in order before he dies which makes every decision he makes direr. As his time comes closer to an end, Superman tries to take on extreme tasks for the greater good of humanity. In addition, Superman’s alter ego, Clark Kent, relates more towards an average reader. The contrast between Superman and Clark Kent is very exaggerated in All Star Superman as Quietly depicts the two figures drastically different in terms of their physical structure and Morrison contrasts their personalities. In the end, “all the best heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary” said Gerard

In a time, where hundreds of movies based around a hero are produced and released each year one would think that the medium would have to change rapidly in order to keep its audience, but no matter how different they seem most all share the basis of the archetypical hero. One story that exemplifies this is the story of Bruce Wayne in the beloved movie Batman Begins. This movie portrays the story of Wayne as he transforms from a semi-pampered rich kid, into a symbol of justice that makes the criminals of Gotham fear the dark. All throughout the story, the distinct steps of the hero’s journey can be seen.…

In order to save the "dying" city of Gotham from the criminal underworld, poverty, and corruption within the police department, Bruce returns to the root of all his misery as a changed man; the identity of Batman was established to prevent anyone else from experiencing the pain and suffering he had endured as a child while the normal Bruce Wayne returns to his "throne" at Wayne Enterprises in order to gain the funding needed for new technology such as the bat-mobile and upgrading the suit as well as using his influence to support individuals such as Harvey Dent who had gained the title of the "White Knight" due to being able to achieve justice during the day without a mask. Despite his vigilantly approach towards establishing law and order, Batman is able to maintain his sanity by acknowledging a specific honor code that prevents him from using deadly force or resorting to killing criminals such as the Joker despite his ruthless and unpredictable nature to harm others for his own enjoyment. What makes Batman an ideal hero is his heart and courage because he refuses to be thanked or acknowledged for his role in justice. As a result, Bruce Wayne actually tries to distant himself from the caped crusader by essentially hiding in pain site and acting like the cocky "Billionaire Playboy" who…

Like so many, I felt an undeniable call to action after watching Davis Guggenheim’s film Waiting for Superman. The film poignantly illustrates the imperative need for a long overdue paradigm shift in American education. In the film, activist, educator and founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone, Geoffrey Canada, shares the disillusionment he felt as a child upon realizing that Superman was not coming to save him from the perils of his impoverished South Bronx neighborhood. His message in the film is that we must become our own superheroes.…

He created the concept of the superman to make his readers continually examine their lives (Fritzsche). This was to counter the effect of Christianity in which one blindly followed the Church’s teachings and got caught up in modern beliefs. The superman was also a concept created by Nietzsche to discuss what the ideal human would be like. The superman would be independant and not be influenced by others, such as ignoring the Church and forming their own opinions. Supermen would also understand that sometimes they would need to be selfish in order to better humanity as a whole and that suffering was a necessity in life.…

“Waiting for Superman” is a song by the band Daughtry. The lyrics tell a story about a girl waiting for the right guy, or ‘superman.’ But while the song lyrics seem focused on the girl, a damsel in distress; the music video accompanying it focuses on telling the story of a man—the story’s superman. The story this video tells is heavily influenced by the pop-culture definition of a superhero, developing a comic-book-esque origin story for this song’s main characters. This underlying theme of comic books and superheroes is conveyed not only in the story told, but also in the portrayal of the characters, the emotion expressed by the setting and lighting, and lyrics of the song.…
