The actress Shannon L. Alder once said, “If you want to discover the true character of a person, you only have to observe what they are passionate about.” Although I have several interests and participate in different activities that play a role in the person that I am today, there is one in particular that has been extremely meaningful to me. My journey with this team started when I was in seventh grade and a cheerleader at a local all-star cheer gym, the year he gym owner started a special needs team,

The town that I grew up in is known for being a very diverse town – the high school that I graduated from back in Clifton, New Jersey, had around 3,300 students enrolled from many different backgrounds, races, nationalities, class, and religions. Walking through the hallway of Clifton High School one would hear many different languages and see many people who look exceptionally different from one another. Because the high school had many students from different backgrounds and wanted the students to be well aware and accepting of this, the school offered various clubs and organizations such as: sports teams, French, Spanish, and Italian clubs, a cheerleading team, and even a pep band. These clubs and organizations allowed many students of different…

There’s something amazing about doing what you love and being around other people who share this passion for the activity you’re both involved in; however, this feeling is heightened by being able to teach the basics of the activity and watching others fall in love the way you did. As I enter my senior year this will be my fourth season as a color guard member and my third season as an assistance coach to the Great Bridge Middle School (GBMS) Color Guard. A few weeks before tryouts for marching band my sophomore year, my coaches, Chris and Donny asked for a few volunteers to travel to the three middle schools that filter into Grassfield (Hickory, GBMS and Hugo), and teach the rising ninth graders a few basics, the flag work and dance they needed for tryouts. I decided to help out due to my dedication for color…

In this study, I explained what a discourse community is and how the Dazzler Dance Team fits within each of the six characteristics. I also proved that the Dazzler Dance Team uses the threshold concept that text mediates activity within the community. The text that mediated this activity is song lyrics to a song performed at a national dance competition. The dance members from this community all have a similar goal and purpose which is to interpret the lyrics with emotion and movement.…

Based off of my observations of the Dazzler Dance Team, the goals of each dance member range, but their basis for performing revolves around the meaning of the song and becoming the character the song is portraying through its lyrics. When introduced to a song that we would later be performing, we would all sit in a circle with our eyes shut and pretend we were the character the song was portraying. Through our own interpretation of the song’s lyrics, we would tune into that character and perform it for an audience.…
