In Nectar in a Sieve and All Quiet on the Western Front characters struggle between hope and fear for the future. In Nectar in a Sieve Rukmani sums up the two, "Hope, and fear. Twin forces that tugged at us first in one direction, and then another, and which was the stronger no one could say. Of the latter, we never spoke, but it was always with us. Fear, constant companion of the peasant," (Markandaya 14). As long as the main characters in Nectar in a Sieve and All Quiet on the Western front have hope for a happy future with loved ones they will survive at all costs.
Fear can make us do terrible things. Paul Baumer in All Quiet on the Western Front, enlists in World War I. When Paul was stuck in a foxhole overnight he killed an enemy soldier then promised himself that he would provide for the enemy soldier's children, if he survives the war, “This dead man is bound up with my life, therefore I must do everything, promise everything in order to save myself,”(Remarque 151). Rukmani is a mother and her first priority is her family. Rukmani is always preparing for the worst and sometimes the worst happens. Rukmani’s love for her family forces her to watch others starve.
