The Village is holding its ritual lottery and the inhabitants of this village are gathering in the town square. First the kids come and start to play with each other. Then come the men. "Soon the men began to gather... speaking of planting and rain, tractors and taxes... The women wearing faded house dresses and sweaters, came shortly after their menfolk. They greeted one another and exchanged bits of gossip... Soon the women, standing by their husbands, began to call their children, and the children came reluctantly... Bobby Martin ducked under his mother's hand and ran... His father spoke up sharply and Bobby came quickly." (Jackson, 2). The women come last to the lottery, after the kids and men. This shows that spatially women are on the lower end of the spectrum below men and even boys. Also, the men are talking about farming and taxes, which is considered important work, while the women gossip in house dresses. This shows that the men in this society did the hard work of farming, planting and taxes and the women were expected to do all the house work. On top of this, the women are not shown the same respect as the men.This is shown by the fact that the children reluctantly came when they were called by their moms, but when Bobby's dad called he immediately comes over.
