The element of chance accompanies the soldiers throughout the war in the novel. On various cases, chance, the probability of anything happening, helps these unfortunate young soldiers. First, throughout the long and drastic years of war, the soldiers in the novel persistently ponder about women. These include women older than their age, their wives, or even, a woman on a colourful poster. Also, when Haie Westhus is asked about what he would do after the war, he immediately thought of women. In this case, chance revealed itself by having three beautiful French women materialize in front of the soldiers when they went out for a swim. “There is one slim brunette” that particularly catches Paul’s eyes, “...[and] her teeth gleam [as] she laughs” (Remarque, 144).
