Why does World War I stand out so much when compared to past wars? It is because World War I is the first modern occurrence of total war. Total war, as the name implies, takes over every aspect of the lives of the people involved, stretching farther than just the battlefield. This is what Paul Baumer finds himself thrust into, as he struggles to tread the line between giving his life, figuratively and literally, to the German army, and ensuring his personal survival and the survival of his best friends, throughout the course of Erich Marie Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front. At home, Paul is unable to return to the comfort of his life before the war, but in battle, he must force himself through basic orders.…
1. This picture draws attention the social conflicts that were happening during the Estate General, by depicting the third estate, middle-class lawyers or officials representing the people, being brought down. The picture shows those in the first two estates, the clergy of the Catholic Church, and the nobles, standing looking freighted by the man on the ground, who is part of the third estate, by the looks of his outfit. During this time the king refused to mandate voting by head or person rather than by order, because of this the third estate fought back, for if they did vote by head the third estate would have the advantage over the other two estates. They held meetings and elected deputies to write down their grievances, by doing this they thought the king would solve all their problems, but then France experienced a food shortage.…
Change In the novel “All Quiet on the Western Front”, Erich Remarque shows that the war forced change. It is a recurring theme in the novel for things to be different than they used to be. Whether it was a change in men or relationships, the author showed how the soldiers were forced to adapt to the reality of the war. The war robs men of their previous selves by ripping away everything that they once were.…
In chapter six of All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, he develops the idea of disillusionment, an example of this is when Paul gives the description of the shelled school house, “stacked up against the longer side is a high double wall of yellow unpolished brand new coffins” (99) of all the soldiers who will die at the front which could end up being Paul and his comrades. Tjaden says this due to the fact that he knows, an abundance of the soldiers are going to die at the front. The recruits are dying because “they have hardly any training and are sent into the field with only theoretical knowledge” (129). With the recruits being sent to the front and them only having theoretical knowledge, and no combat knowledge is taking…
AQWF Chapter one Analysis In the book All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, Paul Bäumer says ¨We are none of us more than twenty years old. But young? . . . We are old folk.¨ (18). Youth is able to be interpreted many different ways; it can be related to age, but it can also be related to the qualities of a person(or any noun for that matter).…
After being assigned to practice All Quiet on the Western Front duties for chapter two as homework, Mr. and Mrs. Davis set out to perform thorough checks to ensure that everybody has done their jobs. The assignment was honestly quite tedious, but it has given students a firm grasp on the understanding of the book. Mrs. Davis gave a clear explanation of what was going to transpire while they went around class for any time All Quiet on the Western Front work was due. While they checked, the students were to go around amongst their table and practice sharing their best IMG_1098.JPG Students engaged in AQWF discussion question for each job.…
Marcelo Cedano Mrs. Jiruska War Stories 10 October 2016 “Older men declare war. But it is youth that must fight and die.” (Herbert Hoover). Although All Quiet on the Western Front and Saving Private both shows brutality of war and rough conditions, the novel shows more compassion it’s more realistic in that the emotion and feeling toward the enemies.…
World War I was one of the deadliest wars in human history, killing sixteen million soldiers alone, with a total of thirty seven million casualties including civilians. Mankind has been shaped by war throughout its existence. War can vary with type such as guerrilla or nuclear warfare. However, one aspect of war that remains the same is its ability to lay waste to all in its path. War has killed, not only the promising young men and women, but it has killed their dreams and goals.…
A soldier is barraged with emotions during a war, that he must avoid in order to survive. War has forced a soldier to become detached, as he must always stay neutral in order to get through the battle. As the soldier observes innocent creatures being destroyed and watches death occur, he must not let this affect him as he has to block it out. In All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque uses horses and butterflies to represent how war forces soldiers to conceal their emotions, which protects him from the brutal experiences of war.…
“This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure. Death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a beginning generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war”(Remarque). Taking place in World War two, a young man loses everything he held dear to him by becoming a soldier. In All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, Erich demonstrates how the war can force soldiers to grow up by destroying their identity, youth, and innocence.…
Germany flourished on the nationalism in the early 1900’s of its people, ready to encounter an attack at any moment and any time. People forget the decision of war until they are in the flame of its fire. In the novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque explains his war experience in World War 1 through a character, Paul Bumer—a kind and sensitive man. While in school, he used to write poems. Paul’s teacher brainwashed him and other students.…
In his book, All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque is characterizing a young generation who lost everything in the Great War. He describes how Paul the main character, and his comrades perish one by one to the brutality of the war. The author describes how they become more dehumanized, as they fight endlessly for nothing. Because in many of the fiercest battles of the war, there is hardly any territory won or lost, yet the casualties are huge. Finally, the book has an anti-war message prevalent throughout as strong theme.…
Paul Bauer from the novel All Quiet on the Western Front and Adolf Eichmann were both guilty of a lot, granted one character is a piece of historical fiction while the other is real, but how similar are they, really? Paul Bauer and other German soldiers committed atrocities upon the opposing armies during World War 1 such as the use chlorine gas. Adolf Eichmann is responsible for sending millions of Jewish people to what were essentially death camps, where some were worked to nigh death and others were killed outright, often times in gas chambers. Thus are they really all that different as both are responsible for massacring human lives, one simply did so on a battlefield and the other did so in an office. Both men were wrapped up in what seemed…
and I will use the beyond the text strategy of relating to the outer world in order to show my own personal response and insight into the story. Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front is a remarkable story of the German soldiers during world war I and focuses on Paul and his group of friends and family. We are positioned as a reader to think in a negative way…
