The uproar surrounds the idea of race in the twenty first century and the growing campaign that Black Lives Matter. The black community feels as though they have been devalued in our culture. They have the right to feel this way because our nation’s history and present events have reflected this view of African Americans. On the other hand, some argue that All Lives Matter is a growing movement in our nation. However, it is just a response to Black Lives Matter. In reality All Lives Matter is not really a movement, it is more of a saying. Black Lives Matter activist Julius Jones stated “And when people say “all lives matter,” it’s actually a violent statement because the only time people say “”all lives matter” is in opposition to Black Lives Matter and it is the most violent statement of love that you can do. It is like “all lives matters!” It’s -- yes, we understand that, it’s true, but this country, for the long time, the United States acts like black lives don’t matter.” (Mullins, 2015, p. 2) Hence, Black Lives Matter is showing how much race is still a huge factor in today’s society, but if we say All Lives Matter we are taking race out of the discourse.
