Bang. Dead. Another shot in the city. The short story “All about Suicide” by, Luisa Valenzuela, translated by, Helen Lane is about a man named Ismael that only could escape his past one way, which he thought was through murder. The story shares moments in Ismael’s life that had built up anger and remorse inside of him throughout the years. The story begins in the city. Ismael grabs the gun out of the desk, rubbing it across his face. Then the story goes on to explain Ismael’s life, him being in a crib with a dirty diaper and no one caring to change him, then to him in first grade getting into a fight with his friend, to the moment of the decision in a bar with the third glass of alcohol in his hand. We detect that Ismael was neglected as an infant when it says, “Ismael in the cradle crying because his diapers are dirty and nobody is changing him”. (6) When men and women become parents most of them create a special bond with their child the moment they are born. With children that are neglected, like Ismael, their parents never experience that bonding moment with the child so they tend to not care about the child’s physical or emotional needs. Neglectful parents may not change, feed, or bath their children when it is most needed. As the neglected children grow to toddlers they may began to feel emotions they do not understand like shame, sadness, and depression at a young age. They also might experience the feeling that no one loves them, or that they are not good enough for anyone. If a child has a feeling like they are not good enough for someone they will have little to no desire to make friends. They would rather distance themselves from all activities and people in their life because they are afraid of rejection. The story says, “Ismael in the first grade fighting with a classmate… (6) Children that are neglected, as they get older, they began to try to deal with their emotions. Since they were never taught, the right and wrong way to express their feelings they often tend to act out. We can indicate that the reason why Ismael got into a fight in the first grade was either that he was angry at a certain situation or that he wanted attention. Even though Ismael would have got negative attention from getting in the fight, it did not matter to him because negative attention is better than no attention at all. Children that do not get the attention that they need at home will start finding different ways to get attention. They may also began to do certain things to cope with their emotions. In this case, Ismael could have gotten into a fight because bullying might have been a way he copped with his feelings and fighting might have been how he released his anger. In all I believe that Ismael just wanted the feeling that someone actually cared about what they are doing for just a moment. There is one thing that Ismael, as a child he did not realize, is the anger he felt then, in the first grade, was not going to go away. He will continue to carry that anger he has to his adult hood and will make more decisions that are
